Madagascar National Parks adopts a co-management approach in collaboration with local communities to respond to socio-economic pressures while safeguarding ecosystems.

These efforts aim to promote sustainable development, reduce the impact of human activities and improve the well-being of local populations.

A strong partnership for shared results

Co-management with local communities :

  • Training and capacity-building for COSAPs (Protected Areas Support and Guidance Committee) and CLPs (Local Park Committees).
  • Implementation of shared management contracts.
  • Integration of local practices in the management of Protected Areas.

Community development :

  • Support for sustainable agriculture and reforestation projects.
  • Support for the implementation of income-generating activities.
  • Improvement of local infrastructure.

Combating anthropogenic pressures :

  • Raising environmental awareness and education.
  • Monitoring and combating illegal exploitation (poaching, deforestation, fires) in collaboration with local communities.

Key performance indicators (2023-2028) :

  • Implementation of 70% of the Environmental and Social Management Plan by 2028.
  • Increase Local Park Committee performance to 75% by 2028.
  • Generate €3,200,000 in direct economic benefits for local communities by 2028.
  • 50% of women and vulnerable groups to benefit from development micro-projects by 2028.

Recent achievements:

  • Active participation of 9,547 Local Park Committees in patrols and surveillance.
  • 6,600 fishermen have received professional cards.
  • More than €6 million in economic spin-offs for people living near MNP
  • Protected Areas between 2020 and 2023.
