According to the world classification of Protected Areas established by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park falls into categories I (the RNI part) and II (the National Park). In other words, it is classified firstly as a terrestrial area hosting exceptional or representative ecosystems, geological or physiographical features, managed primarily for scientific research and/or environmental monitoring; and secondly, as a terrestrial natural area designated (a) to safeguard ecological integrity in one or more ecosystems for the benefit of present and future generations.
(b) to exclude any use or occupation that does not correspond to the aims of the designation and (c) to allow visits for spiritual, scientific, educational, recreational and tourist purposes, while preserving the natural environment and the culture of local communities.
Main ecological features: Typical dense dry deciduous forest on limestone plateau, dense sub-humid evergreen forest in caves or shallows, xerophytic bushy vegetation on Tsingy roofs, Savannahs, subterranean Galleries with seasonal or permanent streams, Rivers and streams
The establishment of the Tsingy de Bemaraha Integral Nature Reserve no. IX dates back to 1927. It was designated a “Natural Monument and Site of Scientific Interest” in 1939, then included on UNESCO's World Natural Heritage list in 1990. In 1991, it was declared a “National Cultural Heritage Site”. In 1997, the southern section covering 72,340 ha was downgraded to National Park No. 7, with the aim of promoting, among other things, the expansion of ecotourism. The northern section, covering 85,370 hectares, remains under the Integral Nature Reserve regime.

Andamozavaky | Visit the gigantic limestone cathedrals, dense networks of faults, deep crevasses and blocks of limestone sculpted into blades or sharp points forming an immense field of Tsingy. Not forgetting a 360° panoramic view from a lookout high up on the roof of the Tsingy, accompanied by a short passage over the 70-metre-deep suspension bridge and a short tour through the Tsingy arcades and down to the bottom of a canyon and forest tunnel. Anjohimanitsy | Adventure and discovery of the mysterious world of the Tsingy for one or two days (overnight stay at the Ankidroadroa campsite in the Park). Abseil down a limestone shaft, then progress through underground cavities, lemurs, wet vegetation in dry canyons on limestone slabs. Itinerary combining the Manambolo, Ankeligoa and Andadaoany circuits. Admire the different forms of Tsingy: gallery with concretion, limestone plateau, canyons, diaclases, cathedrals and caves, as well as Tsingy May (Tsingy with shrivelled forms or skeletal limestone plateau with few cracks). |
