When the sea becomes an opportunity!
Mahitsihazo, Maromandia, February 6, 2026 — A major step forward has just been achieved to strengthen the professionalization of fishermen and improve their livelihoods. Within the framework of the Sustainable Coastal Fisheries Program (SCFP), salting and drying equipment as well as motorized canoes were handed over to the fishermen’s associations of Sahamalaza.

Tools that change lives!
This concrete support provides Local Communities with better working conditions: more efficient processing of fishery products, optimized preservation, and the possibility of accessing offshore fishing thanks to the new boats. Added to this is the establishment of community monitoring, ensuring sustainable resource management and increased accountability of fishermen in preserving their environment.

Women on the front line!
The direct beneficiaries are eight associations of women fishermen and four associations of fishermen, representing nearly 450 households in the commune of Ambolobozo (fokontany Marovato). Indirectly, the entire SOFIA region benefits from this initiative, as it contributes to the diversification of livelihood activities and to the resilience of communities in the face of economic and environmental challenges.

More than a donation: a vision!
Beyond the equipment, this action reflects a strong will: to support fishermen in their professionalization, improve their incomes, and ensure the sustainable management of marine resources. The equipment provided is not only working tools but also levers for a more stable and prosperous future.

A national recognition
The handover ceremony was honored by the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, alongside local authorities and the SOFIA Regional Directorate of Environment and Sustainable Development (DREDD), as well as the representative of the General Directorate of Madagascar National Parks. Their participation reflects the national importance given to the sustainability of marine resources and the well‑being of communities.
🌱 Together, we move forward towards sustainable fishing, serving families and the environment.
